High-Speed Internet
Here's how it works...Your facility will have its own high speed internet home page, customized to your facility. Each resident subscribing to your high speed internet service is always online, all the time. When they turn on, they will see your custom Internet home page and can instantly obtain email, surf the web, and click special links for local area information. Having a resident tie up a phone line is not necessary. Your residents may continue to use dial-up if they wish although not necessary. Each resident at your retirement home is able to create webmail addresses with the domain that we registered for your facility. So for example if your facility is Smith Woods then we would register a domain like smithwoods.com for your facility and then create a custom home page for your facility and then create webmail for your residents with that domain so they can register bob@smithwoods.com. Unlike most webmail services "bob" probably wouldn't be available at Yahoo, Gmail, Hotmail, AOL or anywhere else, but it is available at your facility. We also allow POP3, IMAP and SMTP access so your retirement communities residents can download their email to their mobile phones, their PC, iPad or any other internet enabled device using popular software such as Microsoft Outlook, Outlook Express, Eudora, Mac Mail, Entourage, etc...
Each resident desiring high speed internet service uses a DOCSIS cable modem which are purchased with the system or can be bought from Best Buy, Target, Wal-Mart or other retail outlets. DOCSIS is the standard that all cable modem internet service companies use for high speed internet so residents would even be able to use an old or existing modem from their previous provider. The DOCSIS cable modem connects to an Ethernet card or USB connection on the residents computer. The cost for the modem may be passed along as part of an installation fee or provided to residents as part of the cost for service. The modems are administered and remotely turned on and off depending on who is authorized for service. The cable modem will work with any operating system with a network card (Macintosh, Linux, Unix, Windows) and USB will work with all versions of Microsoft Windows 98 SE or better.
For installation SeniorTV installs a CMTS (Cable Modem Termination System) into your existing or new commercial satellite wholesale cable headend using DirecTV and then we connect the equipment to the Internet using either a T-1 or DSL connection from the local phone company. The CMTS SeniorTV commercial TV headend then shares the high speed internet connection with everyone on your cable system using the existing coaxial wiring. This is the same method used by large franchise cable TV operators except the cost is much less. Your cable TV wiring system and amplifiers are upgraded or replaced for 2-way capability so that the cable TV channels and computer downloads are delivered forward from the headend to the resident computer, and the resident's web requests are delivered in reverse back to the commercial television headend. Utilizing a good wiring system is important.
